Osciel Velásquez, presidente de Sonapesca explica que “como gremio asumimos los errores, hemos hecho los cambios necesarios para alinearnos con los estándares éticos que Chile y los chilenos hoy exigen. Dicho eso, la pregunta es si es conveniente para Chile improvisar soluciones que pueden sonar bien para la galería, pero que en la práctica, además de tener problemas de legalidad, no sólo afectarán al sector pesquero en su conjunto, sino que también puede generar una verdadera catástrofe en la gobernanza pesquera y por tanto a la sustentabilidad de los recursos y de la actividad”.
Asimismo el representante de Sonapesca insistió en la necesidad de terminar con frases que no benefician al país ni a quienes aportan a esta industria. “Se ha planteado que la actual ley entrega a perpetuidad el mar a unos pocos y queremos aclarar fuertemente que el sector industrial agrupa a más de 200 empresas grandes pero, también pymes, que tienen una tradición en la pesca, y que son parte fundamental de la estructura económica regional. Pero también que la pesca artesanal hoy desembarca sobre el 50% de las capturas, más de un millón de toneladas”, agregando que el país se encuentra en una situación difícil y preocupante respecto del empleo y el desarrollo de la economía, por lo que “debemos evitar que esto se transforme en una nueva batalla entre Congreso y Gobierno y pensar más en las familias que viven de la pesca”.
Finalmente, Velásquez llamó a participar de un diálogo fructífero, “abiertos a discutir las propuestas tanto del Gobierno como de los gremios artesanales para acordar un sistema que permita proyectar la pesca industrial y artesanal de largo plazo, cuidar la biomasa para las futuras generaciones, controlar la pesca ilegal y cuidar nuestras pymes regionales. Porque en el día a día la relación comercial, humana entre quienes desarrollamos pesca industrial y los pescadores artesanales es permanente y en muchos casos interdependientes”.
