Los docentes universitarios y de otros niveles de educación deberían leer varios libros al año, tanto de la especialidad como de los que podríamos llamar “cultura general” y que suele ser de utilidad para enriquecer nuestra labor formativa.
Con motivo del Bicentenario de la República, en 2010, la Editorial LOM publicó una edición corregida, aumentada e ilustrada de la “Historia del libro en Chile. Desde la Colonia hasta el Bicentenario”, del profesor Bernardo Subercaseaux, cuya primera versión data de 1993.
Es el fruto de un trabajo de investigación no menor y que muestra parte de la historia de nuestro país teniendo como eje la industria del libro. El autor nos muestra la evolución desde los escasos ejemplares producidos en Chile en la primera mitad del siglo XIX hasta el desarrollo de una industria editorial, con altos y bajos, en la segunda mitad del siglo XX; y su situación en la década inicial de la presente centuria.
Su análisis plantea que el libro es bien cultural y, al mismo tiempo, un producto material. En esta historia particular de Chile, quienes somos lectores y/o autores nos identificamos y nos vemos de una u otra forma involucrados.
El papel del Estado como agente cultural es uno de los capítulos elaborados por Subercaseaux en el cual trata de las políticas públicas relacionadas con esta industria en particular y sus distintas etapas, como la creación de la editorial Quimantú durante el gobierno de la Unidad Popular y su posterior desaparición.
Los libros son parte de la sociedad y la evolución de esta y de la economía los afecta, así como a sus productores (editoriales e imprentas), sus autores y sus lectores. Los cientos de miles de libros que fueron picados y transformados en materia prima a inicio de los ’80, con el fracaso de la Editora Gabriela Mistral; los ejemplares que se regalaban al comprar una revista, en los años 80, y los que se obsequiaban con el Maletín del libro en los 2000, son partes de lo que el autor describe en su historia.
Para los amantes de la lectura, este texto es un hermoso trabajo que les hará bien, los dejará satisfechos y contentos, a pesar de que no todo lo que dice es positivo. Y aunque ya han pasado 11 años desde su última edición y ha habido importantes cambios en materia de lectura, dada la masificación de Internet, gran parte de sus contenidos se mantiene vigente.
Lo mismo con na de sus citas -de un antiguo proverbio hindú- que siempre lo estará: “Un libro abierto es un cerebro que habla; cerrado, un amigo que espera; destruido, un corazón que llora”. Para quienes ejercemos la docencia, la invitación permanente es, entonces, a motivar para que los cerebros hablen, a aceptar que los amigos esperen y a evitar el llanto de nuestros corazones.
